Instilling a Commitment to Service

“It has made me who I am today.”

Karen Katz ’98

Attended Spring 1998

When did you attend Harlaxton?

I attended in spring of 1998.

Did you have any unique experiences during your time at Harlaxton?

I learned to drive on the opposite side of the road by my Meet-a-Mum and traveled to Sweden to see a pen pal I had had since childhood.

Does Harlaxton still feel like a second home? Have you returned since studying abroad?

Yes! I have returned four times (twice for reunions with UE and twice to work with students). Harlaxton Manor still maintains its magic. I thought I may feel differently having been away for so long, but if anything, it made me realize that it really is my British home.

Do you have a favorite trip from your time at Harlaxton?

I loved visiting Ireland. The adventure on the ferry, kissing the Blarney Stone, meeting long-lost “cousins” in Killarney, and experiencing the best fish and chips of my life while seeing the history I had just read about was phenomenal.

Did your time at Harlaxton have any influence on your future? Was it a life-changing experience?

I’m not sure anyone can attend Harlaxton College without being influenced for life. As a college student, the opportunity to travel on my own and meet new people from different backgrounds and cultures impacted me and inspired a love of travel and commitment to service. It has made me who I am today. I am proud of my time at Harlaxton College and appreciative of all that University of Evansville offers students.
