Becoming a Global Citizen

“I will always consider Harlaxton my second home.”

Hayley Elliott

Major: Sociology and International Studies

What made you choose to study at Harlaxton?

I chose to study at Harlaxton because I knew that I would be able to travel to many different countries while I was there as well as England.

Did you have a life-changing experience during your time at Harlaxton?

I got to take part in a Habitat for Humanity build in Portugal during my time at Harlaxton and that was definitely life changing. It made my Harlaxton experience about more than just myself, and it allowed me to give back to the global community.

Based on your experience, what makes the Harlaxton program unique?

Harlaxton is unique because the students come from different universities from all over America, and we live in an intentional community with one another. We are encouraged to travel to new places while discovering what it means to be a global citizen.

How has the manor become your second home?

I met some of my best friends while I was at the manor. I lived there and I learned there, all the while creating some of the most amazing memories. Even though I only lived there for a short time, I will always consider Harlaxton my second home.

What advice do you have for future Harlaxton students?

I would tell them to live in the moment. A lot of people can get caught up in homesickness or stress, but just remember that your home will always be waiting for you when you get back. So try not to waste your time missing it, and spend more of your time living in the moment and taking full advantage of the amazing opportunity you have because it goes by quicker than you think.
