When did you study at Harlaxton?
I studied at Harlaxton in Spring 2019.
What made you choose to study at Harlaxton?
I was supposed to study abroad for my foreign language major and my advisor told me that going to Harlaxton would be a great way to prepare myself. It seemed like a really cool opportunity and the manor looked beautiful, so I was really excited to go!
Did you have a life-changing experience during your time at Harlaxton?
Harlaxton altogether was pretty life-changing. I've always dreamed of traveling the world, but I never thought I'd get to study in England for a whole semester. Being captain of Gregory House was pretty awesome. I even planned my own house competition, which was just an end-of-the-semester carnival for everyone. It was a lot of fun. The friends I made are some of the kindest, craziest, and funniest people. It was my best semester of college socially and academically. I achieved my highest semester GPA while there.
Based on your experience, what makes the Harlaxton program unique?
What makes Harlaxton unique is definitely living in a gorgeous manor. Also, the community that you form with students, faculty, and manor staff. Even if you didn't talk to someone every day, we all knew each other. People who didn't always get along still looked out for each other in the end. Not to mention, the trips to nearby cities on Wednesdays were so fun. It was cool that the school planned extra trips for us. Touring Shakespeare's home and the Lincoln Cathedral was amazing. Those excursions are times I'll never forget.
How has the manor become your second home?
Spending a whole semester in the manor, it's easy for it to feel like a second home. The friends you make there feel like family. You spend nearly every day studying in the library or getting drinks in the Bistro. You do your laundry there and eat in the refectory. You and your friends watch movies and play board games in the Junior Commons Room. You binge watch Love Island with your friends in the Pearson room. You pull all-nighters in the Schroeder Lounge. How could Harlaxton not become a second home?
What advice do you have for future Harlaxton students?
Make sure you double/triple check the dates and times before booking flights and train rides. I didn't double check my flight times and ended up spending 24 hours in the Budapest airport alone. It was crazy. Also, be kind and get to know the amazing people in the Student Development Office. Megan Janasiewicz made my Harlaxton experience so much better than I could've imagined. Thanks to her, I got to be a student ambassador at the Advisory Council dinner, have a fun Valentine's Day party with friends, tour the clocktower and Belton House, and see Michelle Obama speak at the O2 in London.
